One purpose of children’s ministry is to build a “library” of hymns, songs, scripture, and prayers — the “classics” as well as those created specifically for children, even those whose words are rich and mysterious, and which kids (or their parents!) may not entirely understand.
“Jesus said, ‘Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.’ ”
– Matthew 19:14
Christian faith is a journey that takes a lifetime
Children who have heard and experienced Bible stories, who know our hymns, have been present at the Eucharist and have heard the words at Baptism, will have the building blocks on which to discuss, when they are older, the matters of faith and life. The language and practice of our faith is becoming a part of them.
We know our rich Christian tradition is the best mental food for our children’s eager brains; we offer as much as possible so they can grow up with a ready-made library from which to draw.
