Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.

—1 Corinthians 12:4-7

What are spiritual gifts?

Everyone has gifts to share; whether it’s a natural talent or ability, a learned skill, or even a special sense of fulfillment from a particular activity. As Christians, we believe our skills and talents are also gifts to us–abilities endowed by the Holy Spirit to enrich our lives, and the life of the world.

From the first days of the church, folks like St. Paul said that the healthy functioning of the church will come as each member exercises their particular spiritual gifts. St. Paul loved the image of the church as the body of Christ, many gifts coming together for the building up of the community.

To explore your own gifts, use this inventory created by the Episcopal Diocese of Long Island.

Take the Spiritual Gifts Inventory

Be sure to return to this page with your results so you can see how your spiritual gifts connect with the life we share at St. James’, and explore ways God might be calling you to serve, both in our parish and our wider community.

We hope this inventory and directory are helpful tools for your own understanding and discernment. For the purpose of this quiz, spiritual gifts are identified as Administration, Communication, Craftsmanship, Exhortation/Encouragement, Faith, Giving, Healing, Hospitality, Leadership, Mercy and Caregiving, Missionary, Musician, Prophet, Serving, Teacher, and Wisdom.

Match your Spiritual Gifts to St. James' Ministries
