Always Coming Closer to Christ

We believe that we are all constantly growing in faith, and that it’s even more productive and enjoyable when we do so together.

Sunday Forums: Faithful Transformation

As we emerge from COVID, and as we reflect on transitions happening in our parish, here’s the theme for Adult Forums on Sunday morning: “The changes and chances of this life: Faithful Transformation.” These gatherings, which take place on Sunday mornings from 10:30-11:00 a.m., will focus on various aspects of growth and transformation in our life together. Each Sunday, a member of the clergy staff will offer a presentation, and then we’ll break into discussion at small table to explore the theme du jour.

We’ve divided the program year into five segments, with about several weeks on each of the following themes: Discernment; Spiritual Gifts; Call; Adaptive Change; and Hospitality. Our learning together will be enhanced by your presence and participation. Join us each week, or whenever you are able.

Wednesday Morning Bible Study

This clergy led study will pick up the theme of healing which will be our Sunday focus, looking at stories from the Bible that highlight healing. The group meets each week at 8:30 am in Sunderland Hall. Many who attend the study also attend the Wednesday morning Holy Eucharist at 8:00 am. You can also join us on Zoom with password stjames.

Sacred Ground

Starting in September, we will again offer this fine series created by the Office of the Presiding Bishop. The series focuses on racial reckoning and reconciliation, a timely topic as our culture grapples with the best ways to talk about our history. This ten-week series will be offered once a month, from September through June. The curriculum includes a number of readings and videos, which parishioners are to review on their own, followed by a discussion each month with other members of Sacred Ground. If you have questions about this series, contact the Rev. Jay Sidebotham (jsidebotham@stjames.org).

Men of St. James'

Men of St. James’ is a weekly small group at St. James’ for men of all ages. The mission of the group is to help men discern how God is working in our lives, and how Christ’s teachings and parables, as recounted in the Gospels and with reference to the other books of the New and Old Testaments, apply to our professional and personal lives as men, husbands, and fathers in our contemporary society in general, and in life in New York City in particular.

The group will always include prayer and reflections on Scripture, but it is not a Bible study group per se: the ongoing objective of the group is to develop a sense of fellowship and community where men can feel comfortable sharing issues from their life situations with other men in an atmosphere of complete confidentiality. The group grew from the recognition that men, unlike women, do not ordinarily share their personal concerns, often the issues in their lives which are most important, whether they relate to their relationships or marriages; their children, relatives, or friends; their careers; or their faith; and that participation in the group can help to create bonds of fellowship which encourage sharing.

Men of St. James’ meet on Fridays from 9:00-10:00 a.m. in person at the church and via Zoom. If you are interested in joining the group, please contact Jim Olson or Bob Stinson for more information.
