| Pastoral Eucharist & Luncheon |
|
At Christmas and Easter, St. James' hosts a Eucharist and festive luncheon for older parishioners and those who have difficulty getting to church on a regular basis. A guest may bring a family member or an aide, and transportation is provided if necessary. A few residents at DeWitt and Morningside Nursing Homes are also invited. What is unique about the 11:30 Eucharist? There is a special music program, often with a small choir. The Eucharist is seated, as several ofthose attending are unable to walk to the altar rail. Why is the luncheon called gala? Piano music provides a lovely background for the luncheon. The Great Hall and the tables are decorated. The volunteers serve and pour the wine. Each guest takes home a little shopping bag that contains a plant, some candy and a special prayer. The guests are mailed photographs of them that were taken at the lunch. How do volunteers help? Volunteers are the hosts of the luncheon which is planned by the Pastoral Committee. They set up the room and prepare the gift bags in advance. They greet the guests as they arrive, assist them at the 11:30 Eucharist, serve at the luncheon and clean up afterwards. They bake brownies and cookies for the dessert.
