Service Opportunities for Youth

Want to make a difference in your world?
If you need community service for school, or simply feel called to help other people, volunteering through St. James’ is rewarding: in addition to presenting a variety of service opportunities, we also provide a framework for spiritual reflection on the tasks at hand.

Friday Night Dinner Program
The second Friday of each month, youth meet in the St. James’ kitchen to prepare, serve and wash dishes for a 3-course, seated dinner for 80 homeless or low- income guests. The evening runs from 5:30-9:00 p.m. Friends are welcome!

Knit!
Knitting has come to the Friday Night Dinner Program. Volunteers can learn how to knit, and work on handmade scarves for dinner program guests. Dates and times coincide with the Youth Friday Night Dinner Program, above.

Youth Mission Trip
Every year, youth travel to a different city to perform service work together. It’s a fabulous time, and highly recommended to all youth grades 7-12. Past trips have included Boston, to participate in soup kitchens and in projects helping the homeless; Washington, DC, where we painted a hospital chapel, and New Orleans, La., where we distributed emergency supplies, cleaned storm drains and gutted a house.

Worship
Lend your talents to the worship services at St. James’. At the 9:10 a.m. Sunday service, youth sing in the choir, acolyte, usher, read the lessons, lead prayers, and assist with communion. All are ways of serving God and our community. The new Twilight Compline Service for youth needs volunteers, too. We will teach you everything you need to know —and encourage you to try something new!

Teach
Youth are often needed to chaperone or teach younger members of St. James’. Spend the night with the 4th-6th graders at their annual church sleepover, the Lock-In, take on a role at the Good Friday Children’s Service, lead an Easter Egg hunt…the list goes on!
