    { We're Glad You've Visited }

We welcome you and invite you to enter into a deeper exploration of a community that shares the love of Jesus Christ with each other, our city, and the world. It takes more than a few words to describe a parish, but there are two things we can tell you right away: we are committed to Jesus Christ and from that commitment flows our care for one another and our ministries. In every ministry and program, we at St. James' Church on Madison Avenue at 71st Street invite you to enter more deeply into the life we share in Christ. We hope you will join us.

The Rev. Brenda G. Husson, Rector

8th Grade Confirmation

Renew in these your servants the covenant you made with them at their Baptism.
Send them forth in the power of that Spirit to perform the service you set before them...
- From the Bishop's prayer in the Confirmation Service, Book of Common Prayer pg 418

Confirmation is the sacramental rite in which we reaffirm our baptismal vows and receive strength from the Holy Spirit through prayers and the laying on of hands by the Bishop. Confirmation is also a way officially to become an Episcopalian.

Adults interested in Confirmation at St. James' should contact the Rev. Will Peyton.

Confirmation Program for 8th Graders at St. James’

The Confirmation Program at St. James' prepares those who choose to re-affirm their Christian faith for being confirmed by a Bishop.  The Rite of Confirmation is described in the Book of Common Prayer as “the mature reaffirmation of baptismal vows.”  Confirmation is an opportunity to explore your identity as a Christian, and to expand your involvement in our parish and the wider church.  The leaders of the Confirmation program include Chris Harding, Director of Youth & Young Adult Ministries, the Rev. Ryan Fleenor, and parishioner George Wade.

Confirmands make a commitment to each of the following areas (September through May):

Worship

  • Confirmands are expected to attend worship every Sunday and to take on a leadership role in the 9:10 a.m. service as an Usher, Acolyte, or a member of the choir.  The choir sings most Sundays, ushers and acolytes serve monthly, lesson- and prayer-readers serve every 6-8 weeks. If you would like to try something new, we will teach you all you need to know!

Education

  • Confirmands attend class every Sunday from 10:15-11:00 a.m. in the Kinsolving Room (2nd floor). This time of education and discussion is facilitated by Chris Harding, George Wade, and St. James' clergy.

Community & Mission

Confirmands, and occasionally parents, participate in a number of fellowship and mission activities throughout the year:

  • Friday Night Youth Dinner Program 2nd Fridays, September through May, 5:30 - 9:00 p.m.
Youth in grades 7-12 prepare and serve a seated, three-course dinner for 90 homeless guests, doing everything from chopping to cooking to dishes. Friends welcome.

  • Confirmation RetreatIncarnation Camp, Ivoryton, CT
Confirmands join George Wade, Chris Harding and other Youth Advisors to learn about the Baptismal Covenant, participate in a ropes course, enjoy a bonfire, and attend Eucharist in an outdoor chapel, while we bond as a group.

  • Youth Mission Trip | Details TBA
Confirmands join the wider Youth Group to work with St. Vincent's School in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

  • Confirmation Sunday | April 30, 2017
A Bishop of the Diocese will confirm members of the class who decide to reaffirm their Christian faith.
