The St. Jamesians

St. Jamesians are parishioners in their 20s & 30s who meet regularly for spiritual activities, service projects and social events.  Newcomers and friends are always welcome.  The purpose of our group is to connect young adults to one another and to the whole parish.  We are here to help you find ways of being a part of this community that you find meaningful, and that bring you joy.

Ongoing events for parishioners in their 20s & 30s

Kick-Off at the Met
Every September, we enjoy a religiously themed tour followed by refreshments

Friday Night Dinner Programs
Serve at St. James’ Friday Night Dinner Program, which provides a seated, three-course dinner for eighty homeless guests. Come any time between 5:30 and 9:00 p.m. to cook, serve and wash dishes.

Sunday Brunches
On the third Sunday of every month, parishioners in their 20s & 30s meet at coffee hour following the 11:15 a.m. service for brunch at a neighborhood restaurant.

Sunday Dinners
On the first Sunday of every month, parishioners in their 20s & 30s meet following the 6:00 p.m. service for a dinner at a casual neighborhood restaurant.

City-Wide Young Adults Trivia Night Fundraiser
St. James’ hosts an annual, city-wide fundraiser for young adults in Episcopal parishes around the city. Quizmaster Campbell Wharton challenges tables to compete for prizes while raising money for Episcopal charities.

City-Wide Christmas Party
The St. Jamesians regularly host the NYC Young Episcopalians Christmas Party.

Lenten Project
During Lent, the St. Jamesians take on a group project. These have included a food stamp fast, where we assumed the grocery budget of a NYC food stamp recipient for one week, and shelter service, where we filled all of the shifts at the homeless shelter operated jointly by St. James’ and Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church.

Retreats
There are annual winter and summer retreats for parishioners in their 20s and 30s.  These weekends of fellowship, spiritual reflection and plenty of home cooking are a great chance to escape the city.

Mission Trips
In 2010, the St. Jamesians will take our third trip to New Orleans to assist in ongoing efforts to rebuild after hurricane Katrina. Our members also participate in parish-wide missions trips to Haiti and Malawi.

Book Clubs and Bible Study
At least once a year, there is a book club or Bible study just for parishioners in our age group.  Selections range from Desmond Tutu’s God Has Dream to C.S. Lewis’ The Great Divorce, to the Book of John.
