For Whom the Bells Toll
On Tuesday, May 6 the state of Georgia executed William Earl Lynd. Lynd’s execution was the first in the United States in nearly eight months. St. James’ rings our church bells for two minutes at 6:00 p.m. every day a state-sponsored execution takes place anywhere in the United States. Our bell-ringing is part of a national campaign by religious organizations to protest the death penalty. When you hear the bell ringing, take a few moments to pray for the person being executed, for their victim(s), and for all affected by violence.
Children’s Book Drive for Malawi
now through June 30
This summer, 28 St. James’ parishioners and staff will travel on Partners in Mission trips to Malawi. You can support their efforts—and our partners in the Anglican Diocese of Southern Malawi—by donating new or gently used children’s books. The books will be used to start a children’s library and tutoring center. Books on religious topics are especially needed. Drop donations off at the Parish House reception desk.
If you or someone you know is in the hospital, or having outpatient surgery, please contact Martie Metzler, Associate Rector for Pastoral Care. Clergy and lay ministers visit homebound parishioners for pastoral care and to provide Holy Communion. Just give us a call.
20s & 30s Trip to Coney Island
Sunday, May 18, 12:30 p.m.
The Cyclone’s not closed yet... Instead of our usual neighborhood brunch this month, parishioners in their 20s and 30s will head to Coney Island. Friends and newcomers are always welcome. Meet the group following the Parish Annual Meeting; we’ll take the subway together from there. Contact Kate Salsibury with questions.
St. James’ Parish Directory
The Parish Directory will be updated over the summer. It will again include adult names, nicknames, addresses, primary household telephone numbers, adult e-mail addresses and the names of school-aged children. All pledging members from 2007 and from 2008 through June 1 will be listed and a copy of the new directory will be available in the fall for each pledging household. A notice emphasizing that the information will be for internal uses only will be on the title page. This month you will receive a postcard with your personal data as we propose to print it. Should changes be necessary, please mark them on the postcard and return it by mail, or leave it in Robin Young’s mailbox at the Parish Hosue reception desk by June 1. Please direct your questions to Robin Young.
The Second Time Around
Thursday, May 29, 9:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
We are now collecting gently used items for our twice- yearly sale to benefit agencies serving need in NYC. We especially need designer clothing for our Second Time Around Boutique. Please, no books! Before delivering furniture or other large donations, please call, as storage space is limited. To help set up the week of the sale, or to volunteer during the sale, contact Grace Beacham.
What Do You Love About St. james?
I have been a life long member of St. James’ Church and as the youngest of four children, I had looked forward to becoming a member of the Youth Group for many years. I could hardly wait until I was in the seventh grade so I could participate in the Friday Night Dinner Program. I found that the Youth Group provided an opportunity for me to share experiences with my peers while reaching out to the congregation and community at large.
During our Youth Group meetings, we are able to interpret our faith and learn about how other people our age relate to their spiritual life. This is a unique situation for teenagers because they don’t often discuss their religion with their friends and classmates.
Being involved in the Youth Group has taught me to reach out to my community and beyond. Our director of Youth Ministries, Kate Salisbury, encourages us to be leaders and to confront new challenges. I have participated in mission trips to Malawi, Boston and New Orleans.
What I love about St. James’ are all the wonderful memories that I have as a Youth Group member.

Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be
constant in prayer. —Romans 12:12
The names of persons on the weekly prayer list are printed in the Sunday bulletin so that they may be included in our daily prayers. Each name remains on the prayer list for one month. If you want a name to continue on the list for another month or you wish to add or remove a name, contact any of the clergy or call 212.774-4256.
