The Rev. Craig D. Townsend, Vicar

Craig arrived at St. James' Church as Associate Rector for Education in the fall of 1997. He was named Vicar (senior associate) in 2007. In addition to assisting with all aspects of worship and pastoral calling, Craig focuses primarily on adult education and supports the work of our Directors of Youth and Young Adult Ministries and Children’s and Family Ministries. Since its inception in 2003, Craig has also served as Coordinator of the Lilly Program, a mentoring program for new clergy.

Craig was born in Syracuse, New York, and received an A.B. from Brown University, an M.Div. from the Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, Mass., and a Ph.D. in the History of Christianity and American Religious History from Harvard University in 1998. He lives in Brooklyn with his wife and two children.
